Things to Consider Before Having Your Car Painted

Spraying Paint On A Car

Keeping their car looking good is a matter of pride for many people. Sometimes that means washing and waxing it; other times it means putting in some work to make that car look good again. Older cars with paint damage may need a new paint job, and if you are considering a repaint, you need to know a few things.

Evaluate the Body Shop

Finding the right shop to do the paint on your car is not always easy. If you are new to the shop, the only way to evaluate the shop is on testimonials and past work. Take a look at the cars they are working on, look up reviews or testimonials online, and talk to the shop owner and staff a little before making your decision. If the shop feels like a good fit, then you have found the right place.

Prepare the Body of the Car

A good paint job starts with good body preparation. Some shops offer paint service without any body prep, but even a nearly new car will have dings or scratches on the body. If you do the bodywork yourself, you can use one of these shops, but you will be happier with the final product if you have the body shop prep the body for you.

Choose a Color

Color choice is one of the most difficult parts of getting a new paint job on your car. The three most common colors in the United States right now are black, white, and gray, but all of these colors have positives and negatives to them.

White

White cars look nice, and the light paint color helps deflect heat in the summer months, keeping the car cooler inside. The car may need washing a little more often, but that depends on where you drive the car and the road conditions. White cars stand out in traffic better as well, making them a safer option.

Black

Black cars are also very nice looking, and when the paint is done right, the black paint can make the body lines look really sharp and professional. One downside is that door dings or scratches to the paint stand out more on the black paint than on lighter colors. Also, temperature can be harder to regulate as black paint absorbs heat. However, in the winter, the snow and ice melt off faster from black vehicles.

Gray

Gray is a good choice to put you in the middle, getting the best of both worlds. This color hides dirt well and doesn’t absorb too much heat. If you think gray is too drab and boring, you can dress it up by adding highlights or graphics to the car. Or you can leave the paint plain for a subdued and professional appearance.

Consider Paint Durability

The most common paint used on cars these days is urethane. Most manufacturers use it because it is good at resisting chips and scratches, stands up well to UV light (the sunlight), and is not too difficult to apply to a vehicle.

In most cases, a base coat of urethane with a clear top coat will do the job and outlast acrylic paint by many years. You have to take care of the paint, washing and waxing the car regularly, but if you have a choice, the urethane is a good option for old or new cars alike.
